Should You Stain or Paint Your Deck?

Your deck is an important part of your home’s exterior. It’s functional, but it can also improve your home’s aesthetics. There are things to consider when choosing what finishing method is suitable for your deck. Should you paint or stain your deck?

Painting Your Deck

Painting your deck is exciting and offers a lot of benefits. Paint comes in many colors, and it lasts for up to 10 years. A painted deck does not require too much maintenance. It gives your home a uniform look as you can match it with your entire home’s color. It’s best to hire a professional to paint your deck. A professional offers quality service and high-grade paint.

On the other hand, painting hides the details of your wooden deck. If you like to show its unique details, you may not like a painted deck. Over time, the paint may also trap moisture in your deck. Your wooden deck expands and contracts as it gets old, resulting in chipping and peeling of the paint.

Staining Your Deck

If painting your deck is not for you, go for staining. Staining your deck maintains the texture and even enhances your wooden deck’s beauty. Staining protects your deck without covering it with a solid color. This shows off your wooden deck’s unique pattern. Stain also offers weatherproofing and ultraviolet (UV) protection. It prevents moisture or water damage. Some may also contain a fungicide component that protects your wood from mold or pests.

However, staining your deck has its cons, too. Staining does not fill cracks or flaws on your wooden deck. The stain is usually applied thinly to enhance the wood, so it needs to be reapplied every few years. You may consider oil-based stains that can last a few more years than regular stains.
