Get a $500 Tax Credit When You Add Attic Insulation to Your Sussex County Roofing

From summer heat to winter cold, insulation is the silent force that keeps the temperature inside our homes comfortable and energy bills affordable. If you are considering adding more attic insulation to Sussex County roofing, or if you already have since 2012, the improvement could also net you a tax credit on your 2013 return, thanks to legislation passed by Congress at the beginning of the year.

Many forms of insulation qualify for the credit, including batts, rolls, blown-in fibers, rigid boards, expanding spray and pour-in-place. In addition, other products that seal air leaks qualify, such as weatherstripping, expanding spray foam, sealing caulk and house wrap. Here are more details about this opportunity.

  • The tax credit may include 10% of the total cost of insulation, up to $500.
  • Labor and installation costs may not be claimed.
  • Insulation must be installed between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013.
  • The appropriate form must be filed with your tax return to claim the credit.

Adding attic insulation is a relatively inexpensive improvement that can have a dramatic impact on your home’s performance. Remember, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends attic insulation values of R30 to R60. If your home was built before 1980, it likely doesn’t have enough insulation.
