Terms to Know When Shopping for New Jersey Replacement Windows

Looking to lower your energy costs and take some of the strain off your wallet? Energy-efficient New Jersey replacement windows and doors reduce the amount of hot or cool air escaping your home, causing your heating and cooling system to have to work significantly less. Selecting windows can be confusing though! Because window technology has improved dramatically over the past 20 years, there are many terms you may not be familiar with. Here we explain some of the most common terms you will hear when shopping for windows.

• Low-E. Low-E glass features a transparent coating that reflects or absorbs heat. The thickness of the coating and its position in the window dictate how the window will perform. In the summer, Low-E reflects light back outside of your home, keeping the house cooler. During the winter, Low-E reflects heat back into your home, keeping you and your family warmer. Low-E coatings also protect your home’s interior from sun damage.

• Argon-filled. Instead of plain oxygen, the space between two panes of glass in a high-performing glass window is often filled with a lower conductivity gas, such as argon. Argon is denser than oxygen and transfers heat slower. Ultimately, this feature helps lower the cost of your energy bills each month.

• R-Value. The R-Value rating indicates how well a material insulates. The higher the number, the more insulation the material offers and the more money you are saving on energy costs.

• U-Value. While R-Value rates how much heat is retained, U-Value rates how much heat is lost. The lower the U-Value, the more energy efficient your home will be.
