3 Ways to Keep Your Windows From Freezing During Winter

Windows can get frozen in cold winter temperatures. Frozen windows are almost impossible to operate and might get damaged if they are forced open. Windows that are frozen shut are basically unusable until the freezing stops, and the ice melts.

Frozen windows pose a safety hazard as they prevent people from getting out in the event of an emergency. Reduce Condensation

Condensation can cause windows to freeze in cold winter temperatures. The moisture that accumulates on the window can freeze and render the window inoperable until it melts. This can be prevented by reducing the condensation inside the room.

Reduce indoor humidity levels by running bathroom vents when showering and taking extra care not to leave water boiling on the stove. Also, lower the thermostat on your AC to prevent it from causing condensation to form on your windows.

Weatherstripping and Caulk

Make sure your windows are properly insulated in order to prevent condensation from collecting on them.

Apply weatherstripping around your window, placing it at the bottom of the sash and along the areas where the window opens and closes. Go outside your home, and caulk the exterior of your window to seal up cracks or gaps that allow outside air to leak inside.

Plastic Insulation

Window insulation kits, which are normally comprised of plastic shrink film and double-sided tape, can be used to prevent windows from freezing. Apply the shrink film to the windows, and then heat it up using a blow dryer.

Shrink film effectively prevents freezing, but can be very difficult to remove, which means you should only use this technique if you don’t plan on opening your windows until spring. Ask a trusted remodeler for help if the windows get damaged from the film.
