Tips for Giving Your Old Deck a New Lease on Life

If your deck looks worn out and is calling for frequent maintenance, you do not have to tear it all down and start building an entirely new structure. It is possible that most of the critical components are still in tip-top shape. Here are a few tips on giving your deck a new lease on life.

Stripping the Deck

Is it completely necessary to strip your old deck, or is a simple deep cleaning enough? To decide which route to take, be sure to inspect your deck structure from top to bottom. Stripping a deck is often a complicated chore. If the coating is simply faded due to day-to-day weathering, there is a great chance that you can get away with pressure-washing the deck and then staining the boards.

Cleaning the Deck

Accumulation of dirt, vegetation and other debris make decks a bit time-consuming to clean. A deck contractor recommends using a commercial deck cleaner because it is stronger than regular household cleaners and will effectively remove debris buildup sitting deep in the wood grain and between planks. After, use an oxalic acid-based brightening agent to restore the natural, pristine color of the wood.

Picking the Finish

While transparent stains are fairly easier to apply than solid or semi-transparent stains, they need to be retouched on an annual basis to maintain their sleek appearance. If you wish for longevity, opt for a solid color stain, which lasts for three to four years before a reapplication is needed.
