Why Are the Soffit and Fascia Important?

When people think about a roof, most of them just picture the shingles and the roof’s characteristic shape. Few talk about some of the lesser known but still important components. Today, experts from the leading home improvement company in the area talk about two of these components: the soffit and fascia.

Soffit

The soffit is rarely the first thing that people see when looking at the roof. This is because the soffit is located underneath parts of the roof that juts beyond the home’s base structure. Soffits can be made of different materials, but the most popular options are wood, polymer and composite panels.

Fascia

The fascia is the strip or band of material that covers the edges of the roof. Usually made of treated wood, metal or another waterproof material, the fascia also serves as an anchor point for the roof’s gutter system. A remodeling company will usually check the roof’s fascia for signs of damage before going up onto the roof.

Extra Protection

Although the soffit and fascia don’t take the brunt of wear and tear caused by the harsh elements, they still play an important role in keeping the rest of the home protected. The soffit protects the more vulnerable parts of the roof from moisture coming from underneath (blown by the wind), while the fascia serves as a physical barrier against anything coming from the sides.

Other Roles

Aside from providing protection, the soffit and fascia also have other roles. For example, the soffit can also house exhaust vents that keep the inside of the roof from getting damp. On the other hand, a roofing company can install stylized fascia strips to help improve the look of the roof and enhance the home’s curb appeal.
