How Trees Can Damage Your Roofing

Trees can offer several benefits to any property. For instance, they can beautify a landscape and provide protection from the sun and wind. But much like other things, trees may also have a few drawbacks that could affect your home. For instance, their leaves, branches and roots can damage certain parts of your home, particularly your roofing.

Drainage Problems

Leaves can fall into your gutters, build up and cause a blockage. When this happens, rainwater won’t be able to move out of your gutter system, making it possible for water to back up onto your roof or damage the gutter itself.

Roots can also grow and enter and block your drains, causing serious trouble for your plumbing. That said, make sure that your drains are watertight so that tree roots won’t be able to grow into your drains.

Structural Damage

Your roofing contractor may also warn you against trees with structural defects. Dead branches from trees can fall on your roof and puncture or damage its material. You also have to watch out during severe storms as strong winds can break branches, topple trees or send projectiles towards your roof.

After such weather events, make it a point to hire your trusted roofer to carry out an inspection. This way, you can ensure that everything is fine with your roof or immediately perform repairs as needed. But to avoid the risk of trees damaging your roof, it’s best to plant trees far from your home and remove any dead trees within the range of your home.
