The Best Plants to Have on a Green Roof

A green roof offers several unique benefits that most other flat roofing systems don’t provide, including helping to reduce the heat transfer from the outside to the inside. A common question among flat roof owners is: which plants are ideal for green roofs? In this blog, remodeling company Up and Above Contractors answers that question.

Qualities of an Ideal Green Roof Plant

Not all plants thrive on a green roof as it’s considered to be a harsh environment. You need plants that thrive in direct sunlight and infrequent watering. The soil won’t be as deep as on ground level, so plants with large roots, such as trees, are not ideal. As a property owner, you should be aware that a green roof will require more care compared to typical roofs.

Plants for Green Roofs

Succulents are the most likely to thrive in such environments. Succulents are plants that retain their own water in their leaves or stems. Examples include aloe, stonecrop and certain types of cacti. Delosperma is a type of succulent plant that produces strikingly beautiful flowers, an ideal addition to green roofs. Alpine aster, while not a succulent plant, have bright flowers that range from pink to blue.

Aromatic herbs are also good for a green roof. For example, thyme, basil and oregano thrive in this type of environment. Make sure you discuss building an access path with the roofing company to avoid trampling on your plants when you’re harvesting them.
